Rationale
MOSES has major concerns with the County Executive’s proposed budget. We support the efforts of the Dane County Board leadership to develop significant amendments to the budget that retain jeopardized services that
(1) provide a social safety net for some of the most vulnerable community members &
(2) support diversions from the criminal legal system.
See this background information prepared by JSRI for a more detailed explanation.
Both Sheriff Barrett and HHN Chair Supervisor Wegleitner have said that they could live with the compromise.
We hope that, if this package of amendments is passed by the County Board, it will not be vetoed by County Executive Agard. Although it doesn’t provide everything we wanted, it is a big step in the right direction. The effort led by Chair Miles and compromise agreement by Sheriff Barrett and HHN Chair Supervisor Wegleitner deserve our support.
After this budget is approved we will not stop advocating for reforming the criminal legal system including support for Dane County safety net programs.
