Madison Organizing in Strength, Equity, and Solidarity
for Criminal Legal System Reform

Racial Equity Team

Our charge is to help MOSES and its task forces continually improve their understanding of unconscious bias, systemic racism, and other sources of racial inequities in the criminal-legal system, and how to advocate more effectively for positive change. To this end we strive to keep improving our own understanding of racial-equity issues and to share what we are learning, hoping to make conversations about race and racial disparities a normal and productive part of every MOSES meeting. A major part of our work is producing racial equity programming for monthly MOSES general meetings.

We welcome new members, especially  those with a special interest or expertise in racial-justice issues, and would be especially grateful for new members with web and social media skills. Please email mosesracialequity@gmail.com to learn more about this group from our our community organizer James Morgan and chair Pam Oliver.

What we Do

At many general meetings of MOSES, we provide a brief introduction to some relevant aspect of racial equity or inequity and a set of questions for discussion and reflection in small groups. Recent topics have included racist political ads and possible ways of countering them, ACEs (adverse childhood experiences) and the “trauma-to-prison pipeline,” school safety and the role of School Resource Officers, and systemic racial inequities that have come to the attention of individual MOSES and WISDOM task forces. We also work with other groups in MOSES to expand our organization’s racial equity focus.

We will be changing our meeting schedule to accommodate new members.
