Madison Organizing in Strength, Equity, and Solidarity
for Criminal Legal System Reform

Old Law Work Group

Our mission is to ensure that people are given a fair chance to be released on parole in Wisconsin.

Nearly 1600 of the people currently in prison in Wisconsin were sentenced before Truth-in-Sentencing went into effect in 2000 and are (or eventually will be) eligible for parole.

Please join us via Zoom at 8:30 am on the 2nd Saturday of each month
To confirm current month meeting time and zoom link instructions, see the MOSES Calendar

Our actions

  • Educate the community and elected officials on the men and women who have already served at least 25 years in Wisconsin prisons and should be considered for parole.
  • Press the Governor and Parole Commission Chair to dramatically increase the rate of release of for parole-eligible people, wherever  wherever this can be done safely.
  • Attend public meetings of the Parole Commission and monitor changes there, including the pace of releases, length of defers, and rationales offered.
  • Press the Governor to use his power of executive clemency on behalf of long-term prisoners who no longer pose a risk to public safety (if they ever did).

Commutations

Wisconsin governors have the constitutional power to commute (shorten) the remaining sentences of individual prisoners who deserve an earlier release because of their outstanding conduct in prison or because their original sentence was disproportionately long (or both).

Pardons

The Wisconsin State Constitution does not allow governors to grant pardons to anyone still incarcerated, but only to individuals who completed their sentences at least five years ago.
